Educated at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin between 1904 and 1909, Schweitzer‑Cumpăna returned to Romania where he devoted much of his career to portraying village scenes. Gospodărie ţărănească belongs to this extensive series of rural depictions produced in the post‑World War II period. The artist remained active until his death in Bucharest in 1975.
