About this work

Overview

Heinrich Aldegrever’s 1550 engraving presents the mythic episode of Hercules confronting the Nemean lion. Executed in black and white, the image captures a moment of intense physical struggle between the hero and the beast, set against a distant rocky landscape and a modest village with a church spire.

Subject & Meaning

The work illustrates the first of Hercules’ twelve labors, in which he must subdue a lion whose hide is impervious to ordinary weapons. By depicting the hero wrestling the animal bare‑chested, Aldegrever emphasizes human strength and courage confronting an apparently invincible foe, a theme recurrent in Renaissance interpretations of classical myths.

Technique & Style

Aldegrever employs fine, sharply incised lines to render the musculature of the hero and the shaggy texture of the lion’s fur. Cross‑hatching creates subtle gradations of tone, modeling the bodies and suggesting depth. The composition’s compact scale and meticulous detail are characteristic of the “Little Masters” school of printmaking.

History & Provenance

A member of the German “Little Masters” generation that followed Albrecht Dürer, Aldegrever was known for producing small, highly finished prints for a market of collectors. This particular engraving was produced in 1550 and circulated among patrons interested in classical subjects and technical virtuosity.

Context

During the mid‑16th century, Northern European artists revived classical narratives, integrating them with contemporary concerns about virtue and human potential. Aldegrever’s choice of a familiar heroic episode aligns with the broader Renaissance fascination with antiquity and the moral exemplars drawn from myth.
