About this work

Overview

This watercolour, titled Nöbetçi (Orderly Officer), belongs to a substantial series of Ottoman scenes commissioned by the British diplomat Stratford Canning, later Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786–1880). The series was produced during Canning’s early posting in Istanbul, where he documented a wide range of local institutions, architecture, and customs.

Subject & Meaning

The image depicts a uniformed Ottoman officer, offering a visual record of military attire and the role of such officials within the empire’s administrative framework. It serves as a direct observation of Ottoman ceremonial and everyday life, reflecting Canning’s intent to capture the details of the society he encountered.

Technique & Style

Executed in watercolour, the work merges the vivid, dense pigments characteristic of Ottoman miniature traditions with European approaches to perspective and spatial representation. The artist’s handling of colour and line suggests familiarity with both local body‑colour techniques and Western compositional conventions.

History & Provenance
In 1810, the young architect Charles Cockerell met the painter in Istanbul and discussed technique, though he never recorded the artist’s name.

The artist remains unidentified, though Turkish scholars associate him with the workshop of Konstantin Kapidagli. In 1810, the young architect Charles Cockerell met the painter in Istanbul and discussed technique, though he never recorded the artist’s name. Cockerell’s copies of the views are now held by the British Museum. The original watercolours were bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Canning’s daughter Charlotte in 1895.
