Executed at the transition from Mannerism to the early Baroque, the work belongs to the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Cesari occupied a significant position in the Roman art world of his era, receiving a knighthood from Pope Clement VIII and later directing a studio where the young Caravaggio received his formative training.
Subject & Meaning
The painting illustrates the Greek myth of Andromeda, a princess chained as a sacrifice to a sea monster. Cesari presents the nude figure on the left, crowned and wearing bracelets on both wrists, her right arm lifted above her head and her left arm positioned behind her back. In the distance, the monster emerges from the water while another figure descends from the sky toward it, suggesting the arrival of the hero Perseus to rescue the captive princess.
Technique & Style
The composition unfolds against a landscape of water and mountains beneath a cloud-filled sky. Cesari employs chiaroscuro to model forms and establish spatial depth, creating pronounced contrasts between light and shadow that focus attention on the central figures.
