About this work

Overview

Two couples sit nearby, and peacocks appear at the top center.

This copy depicts a scene from the Saddanta Jataka in a rocky landscape, showing two elephants on the left, one raising its trunk, while a man in a striped shirt observes them. Two couples sit nearby, and peacocks appear at the top center. On the right, the same man carries a yoke with elephant tusks toward the other figures, while deep scratches across the image indicate damage to the original cave painting. The work is part of a series of approximately 300 copies made between 1872 and 1885 by John Griffiths and seven Indian students to document the ancient Ajanta cave paintings, the oldest surviving examples of Indian painting dating from the 1st century BC to AD 480.
