About this work
Overview
Created in 1632, this oil on canvas bears the signature and date of Jusepe de Ribera. It depicts a moment from Greek myth in which the condemned figure Ixixion endures an endless torment imposed by Zeus. The work belongs to a quartet of paintings Ribera produced on the theme of mythological punishments, of which only two survive today.
Subject & Meaning
The composition centers on a muscular Ixion ensnared within a dark, roiling cloud, his arms outstretched as if battling an unseen force. Beneath him, a smaller, disheveled figure with wild hair reaches upward, suggesting a futile attempt at rescue. The scene visualizes the perpetual suffering assigned to Ixion for his transgressions against the gods.
Technique & Style
Ribera employs a stark chiaroscuro, illuminating the bodies with a high, directional light that carves deep shadows and highlights muscular contours. The turbulent cloud is rendered in muted tones, contrasting with the bright, almost luminous skin patches. This dramatic use of light and darkness intensifies the emotional tension and underscores the supernatural atmosphere.
History & Provenance
The painting entered the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where it remains alongside Ribera’s depiction of Tityos. The other two works from the original series—portraying Sisyphus and Tantalus—have not survived, making the Prado’s pair especially valuable for understanding Ribera’s exploration of mythic retribution.
Context
Ribera’s series reflects the 17th‑century fascination with classical narratives as moral exempla, aligning with Counter‑Reformation interests in depicting divine justice. By focusing on the physical torment of mythic figures, the artist connects ancient stories to contemporary concerns about sin, punishment, and the human condition.
