The work is an illustration from the Akbarnama, the official chronicle of Emperor Akbar’s reign. It portrays the Mughal army’s siege of the fort of Ranthambhor, held by Rai Surjan Hada, in 1569. The image is a painted page from the manuscript, now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Subject & Meaning
The scene captures Akbar mounted on an elephant, directing his troops as they assault the fortified hilltop. Red‑and‑gold‑clad soldiers advance under a barrage of fire, emphasizing the intensity of the campaign and the emperor’s personal involvement in military affairs.
Technique & Style
Executed in miniature painting style, the illustration combines fine brushwork with vivid pigments to delineate figures, armor, and architecture. The artist renders the elephant’s eyes with delicate detail, lending a sense of liveliness to the animal amid the chaotic battlefield.
History & Provenance
The Akbarnama was commissioned by Akbar and written by his court historian Abu’l‑Fazl between 1590 and 1596.
The Akbarnama was commissioned by Akbar and written by his court historian Abu’l‑Fazl between 1590 and 1596. Approximately 49 artists from the imperial workshop contributed illustrations between 1592 and 1594. After Akbar’s death, the manuscript remained in the libraries of his successors Jahangir and Shah Jahan before being acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1896 from Frances Clarke, widow of Major‑General John Clarke, who had purchased it in India during his tenure as Commissioner of Oudh.
Context
The illustration reflects the Mughal practice of documenting royal achievements through richly illustrated histories. By depicting the siege, the Akbarnama not only records a military event but also reinforces Akbar’s image as a decisive and hands‑on ruler within the broader narrative of his empire’s expansion.
