Kaymakam, or Govenor of Istanbul

The artist's style blends Ottoman watercolour and bodycolour techniques, known for their density and brilliance, with European representational and perspectival conventions, resulting in a distinctive hybrid aesthetic.

Commissioned by Stratford Canning in 1808, the series was later acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1895 from Canning's daughter, Charlotte. A related encounter influenced Charles Cockerell, who met the artist (possibly from Konstantin Kapidagli's circle) in Istanbul around 1810 and later created copies of the artist's architectural views, now housed in the British Museum.

Created during Canning's initial diplomatic engagement with Turkey, the work reflects early 19th-century European fascination with Ottoman culture and institutions. It also intersects with the travels of notable figures like Charles Cockerell and Lord Byron, who were present in Istanbul around the same time.

While the artist remains anonymous, the series contributes significantly to the visual documentation of 19th-century Ottoman life. Its blend of artistic traditions also highlights the cultural exchange between East and West during this period.
