About this work

Overview

Andreas Athemstet is a 1592 copper engraving depicting a bearded gentleman in a ruff collar. Rendered in stark black‑and‑white, the portrait is confined within a circular frame adorned with ornamental carving. A plain background isolates the sitter, allowing the intricate line work of his attire and expression to dominate the composition.

Subject & Meaning

The image presents a solemn male figure, his thick beard and serious gaze suggesting a person of status or scholarly bearing. Latin inscriptions encircle the portrait, likely identifying the sitter and possibly noting the artist’s hand, a common practice in late‑Renaissance portrait prints.

Technique & Style

Dominicus Custos employed fine, cross‑hatching lines to model form, creating a subtle three‑dimensional effect despite the medium’s monochrome limits. The precise incisions and careful shading reflect the Northern European engraving tradition of the late sixteenth century, emphasizing realism and detail over decorative excess.

History & Provenance

The print was produced by Flemish engraver Dominicus Custos, who was active in the imperial court of Rudolf II in Prague before establishing himself in Augsburg. Custos, son of Antwerp painter Pieter Balten, married the widow of goldsmith Bartholomäus Kilian and later instructed her sons Wolfgang and Lukas in the art of engraving.

Context

Created during a period of intense artistic patronage by the Holy Roman Emperor, the work exemplifies the exchange of artistic ideas between the Low Countries and the German lands. Engravings such as this served both as collectible portraits and as means of disseminating the likenesses of notable individuals across Europe.
