Van Douven employs a subtle chiaroscuro, allowing the light to model the face and the folds of the dress while the surrounding darkness recedes. Soft gradations of tone give the portrait a delicate three‑dimensionality typical of Rococo portraiture, and the careful rendering of textiles and jewelry demonstrates the artist’s skill in capturing material richness.

Born in Roermond in 1656, van Douven spent much of his professional life as court painter in Düsseldorf, producing numerous aristocratic likenesses. This particular portrait entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the 19th century, where it has remained part of the museum’s representation of German‑Dutch court painting from the early modern period.
