William Carpenter painted *Gateway of the palace at Indore* in March 1852. It’s a small oil painting showing a doorway in India. Carpenter focused on Indian palaces and rulers during his travels there.

He spent years in India from 1850 to 1856. Carpenter often wore local dress and painted what he saw around him. His work mixes careful detail with softer, lighter touches.

This painting is at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
