About this work
Overview
Created in 1502 by the German painter Hans Holbein the Elder, the work known as the Kaisheimer Altar: Ecce homo belongs to the Northern Renaissance. Executed as a panel painting, it forms part of the Alte Pinakothek’s collection in Munich. The piece illustrates a biblical episode in a courtyard setting, employing a bright, flattened palette typical of its time.
Subject & Meaning
The central figure is a bare‑chested man crowned with thorns and draped in a red cloth, representing Christ in the moment of ‘Ecce homo.’ He is escorted forward by two attendants while a surrounding crowd reacts with a mixture of shock, curiosity and tentative compassion. The composition emphasizes the tension between the calm demeanor of the figure and the emotional responses of the onlookers.
Technique & Style
The figures are outlined with precise contours, and the architectural backdrop—an arched doorway and a figure in a red hat—provides a simple spatial framework.
Holbein the Elder applies a clear, even coloration without deep modelling of light and shade, resulting in a relatively flat visual effect. The figures are outlined with precise contours, and the architectural backdrop—an arched doorway and a figure in a red hat—provides a simple spatial framework. The lack of chiaroscuro reflects the early Northern Renaissance’s focus on surface detail over dramatic illumination.
History & Provenance
The painting was originally intended for the Kaisheim monastery altar, from which its title derives. Over the centuries it entered the Bavarian royal collection and was eventually transferred to the Alte Pinakothek, where it remains on display. Hans Holbein the Elder, father of the later renowned artists Ambrosius and Hans Holbein the Younger, produced the work during the formative phase of his career.
