Overview

Smith, a former officer in the British 44th Regiment, completed the journal between 1828 and 1833, later refining it until 1845.

The drawing *Sunset View on the Ganges* was created by Captain Robert Smith in 1830 as part of a series of illustrations documenting his travels along the Ganges from Calcutta to Cawnpore. Included in the *Pictorial Journal of Travels in Hindustan from 1828 to 1833*, the work consists of 65 detached and mounted pencil drawings, many accompanied by diary entries. Smith, a former officer in the British 44th Regiment, completed the journal between 1828 and 1833, later refining it until 1845. The drawing was later acquired by the museum in 1915 from W. M. Biden of Hampton-on-Thames.
