The painting illustrates the conquest of Chanderi citadel by Babur's army in 1528, a violent event described in Babur's memoirs. An annotation attributes the composition to La'l and the execution to Durga.
Technique & Style
Characterized by soft golds and deep blues, the painting exhibits the artistic style of the Mughal imperial workshop, where La'l was a prominent artist in the late 1500s.
History & Provenance
The painting was part of a manuscript of the Baburnama, translated into Persian in 1589 for Akbar, Babur's grandson. It was removed from the manuscript before being acquired by the museum in 1913 on the London art market.
