Allegory of the Catholic Faith — Johannes Vermeer

Crucifixion of Jesus is a subject in art. The gallery holds 108 works in this subject in art, including works by Odilon Redon, Johannes Vermeer and El Greco.

Jesus was put to death by crucifixion, being nailed to an instrument made by the Romans for capital punishment, commonly named as a cross (Latin: crux). The instrument of crucifixion is taken to be an upright wooden beam to which was added a transverse wooden beam, thus forming a "cruciform" or T-shaped structure.
